Upper endoscopy allows direct visualization of the lining of the upper digestive tract. The examination is performed using a 10 mm wide flexible camera, which is advanced under anesthesia through the mouth, down the esophagus, and into the stomach and first portion of the small intestine.
Upper Endoscopy can be performed for a variety of therapeutic and diagnostic reasons such as diagnosis of Celiac disease, Gastritis, Peptic ulcer disease, GERD, Reflux Esophagitis, Achalasia, Eosinophilic Esophagitis, causes of dysphagia, hiatal hernia, among others. This procedure is also currently used for screening for esophageal cancer in those with Barrett’s esophagus or risk factors for Barrett’s esophagus.
